I have a special free weekly clinic dedicated to the treatment of PTSD. The clinic is open to all veterans and their families. I use an ear acupuncture protocol developed specifically for trauma and used in clinics across the country for the after affects of trauma of all kinds. Patients are treated fully clothed while sitting. Acupuncturists without Borders has also sponsored clinics across the country specifically for returning vets with PTSD, and my clinic is one of those. It's a safe, comfortable environment dedicated to vets alone, and has been very successful in treating the anxiety, nightmares, and flashbacks many of them have been experiencing. I welcome and encourage vets to take advantage of this weekly service.

Veterans and their families have given so much for our country, and I'm honored to be able to give back in this small way. The focus of my practice is trauma resolution. I believe that counseling works best using a team approach between the counselor and client who has come to receive assistance in exploring and gaining understanding in areas of personal life. My goal is to help a client gain the confidence and skill to take responsibility for thoughts and behaviors, and to learn to make desired changes in life patterns. I have worked with couples planning marriage (about to be deployed or just returned) and those working on relational issues after marriage. I have facilitated domestic violence groups so I also have experience with this issue. I incorporate cognitive and behavioral therapy with a Rogerian emphasis on empathic listening. My values are part of me and will influence my therapy, but I believe that there are many paths and do not seek to have a client walk mine.

I've been a social worker since 1969 and an LCSW since 1980. I worked for the State of Oregon Services to Children and Families for 31 years, mainly as a supervisor of all the various programs. This work included court appearances, direct supervision of staff, direct work with clients, complaint resolution, personnel work, resource development and all the various aspects of social work in a public child welfare agency.
I've also had direct client contact and a part time private practice since retiring from SCF in 1998. My work focuses on mental health issues with adults largely and has included couples and families on occasion. I am currently adding EMDR training to my skill set and am using that to deal with the effects of trauma. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) has been proven as an effective treatement for PTSD.
I'm also the Emergency Management Volunteer Coordinator for the City of Gladstone, a Red Cross volunteer in mental health emergency response and a representative to the Clackamas County Organizations Assisitng in Disasters. In this work I've been involved in disaster response and preparation.
I'd be happy to answer any questions about my extensive experience and practice and look forward to continuing to help people deal with their issues. Working with the Returning Veterans Project is a great opportunity to do that.

I specialize in treating children in play therapy, and also assisting parents and families to support children through life's difficult times. I also support parents through parent training/coaching, either in an individual or group format.

Play therapy is an effective approach to treatment with children, and utilizes a child's natural language--play! Play therapy is effective in treating many concerns such as grief/loss, depression, impulse control, PTSD, trauma, anger, social concerns, and more.

I regularly run a girls body image group, aimed at assisting girls in forming their own healthy sense of self concept and body image, amidst the pressures of society and mass media.

Please contact me if you have any questions regarding play therapy, parenting, or if you have interest in a body image group for your child. I'd be honored to help.

I have been in private practice since 1991, and am also a teacher and supervisor of counseling and clinical social work. I work mainly with couples and adult individuals experiencing problems of depression, anxiety, addictive and compulsive behaviors, and/or other mental and emotional health conditions. In particular, I specialize in working with the impact of acute and chronic stress and trauma on both individual functioning and relationship intimacy. My approach is strengths-based and collaborative, meaning that I assume that individuals and families already have the inner and outer resources they need to solve their problems and cope with their difficulties, and that my job is to help clients to access, recruit and deploy those resources effectively. I utilize an array of evidence-based, best-practice therapy methods, based on the needs, preferences and problems of each client I see.

The trauma of war can lead to anger at, confusion about, and resentment toward life, fate, and/or God. It is easy to lose meaning and purpose. Regardless of your faith tradition, or lack thereof, spiritual guidance and support can help release some of the pain of war. Although I have training in some counseling techniques and will at times use some of those techniques, I am not a licensed therapist and do not provide ongoing mental health counseling. My focus is on helping you process the spiritual pain related to trauma, especially the trauma of war. I am a professional chaplain with experience working with clients who have a history of trauma and addiction, including veterans.

I use Smart Brain Good Heart Tools to help get through trauma. They are simple somatic gestures and visualizations that help balance the brain and lessen the anxiety. Most people come to counseling with some sort of distress that they want to relieve as soon as possible. I use as many resources as possible to help my clients accomplish the changes they chose and relieve their distress. I try to build on each client's strengths and insights adding my skills, knowledge, professional training and any appropriate community health care, social and educational networks. Sometimes people will come to counseling for personal growth and exploration. In that situation the focus is more on active interaction with deeper parts of the client's personality than it is on reducing distress. I work with my clients to discern the exact nature of the problem or changes they want to make and create a plan with them for their counseling experience. I use various techniques depending on the client's level of development, learning style, presenting issue and belief system. It is important to me that we work as a team to achieve success in making the changes the client has chosen.

I believe that every person has the strength to move through life’s challenges. Sometimes we may not have the necessary skills to do so, but we can learn and practice them during the journey towards health and balance. My role as a counselor is to listen to, observe, suggest, teach, challenge and encourage clients in their journeys through the rough spots.
When working with a client, I consider all aspects of that person’s life - family, culture, ethnicity, spirituality, relationships, profession, health, and activities. I pay attention to what is said in the moment – verbally and physically – and encourage my clients to also be aware. I am honest, respectful and mindful of the vulnerability of clients who trust me with their life difficulties.
I have experience working with adults, couples, families, children, and adolescents in a variety of settings, including therapeutic settings, schools, and juvenile court. My clients have had a variety of issues, including, but not limited to: depression, anxiety, abuse, grief and loss, abandonment, suicide bereavement, loss of parent (by death or dementia), divorce, parenting/step-parenting, delinquency, substance abuse, and foster care.

I offer supportive psychotherapy and counseling services for individuals, couples and families. My practice serves people with health-related concerns as well as more general issues including stress and relationship concerns.

In terms of experience with the military population, I direct a research project sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health for OIF/OEF veterans and their families. The project is called "Mission Reconnect" and focuses on teaching stress reduction and relationship skills to help with reintegration after return from deployment. I have worked with members of the Oregon National Guard in this project, and found that both veterans and their partners can benefit from learning some simple strategies they can use individually or together to help with reintegration.

I recognize that PTSD, TBI, and mild TBI are more common than many people realize. I can offer support to help cope with and manage these conditions. In addition I have found meditation and other mind/body skills to be helpful both for veterans and their partners. I also recognize that unemployment or underemployment is a real source of stress for many veterans. I don't have any easy answers for this, but can support and encourage exploration of creative ideas in this area.

I appreciate the sacrifices that both veterans and their families have made, and welcome the opportunity to provide what support I can.

I use ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy) as my main therapeutic intervention. Throughout my 30+ years as a therapist, I have regularly observed that most people find ways to avoid dealing with uncomfortable feelings (using alcohol, drugs, eating, video games, etc.)but in the long run these strategies don't work. Helping people learn skills to deal with and accept "human suffering," clarify values, and lead a meaningful life is the overall goal of my therapy.

Check out my website (www.debbiecairns.com) to get a better idea of who I am and to see if you think we would be a good match to work together.

This means that I believe people are basically trustworthy, resourceful, capable of self-understanding, and are able to make the changes they desire. I became interested in working with returning veterans after many conversations with a family member affected by PTSD from combat. Although I've never been involved with military service directly, I have years of experience working with people who are struggling with PTSD and believe strongly in the value of counseling to help with PTSD symptoms. I consider it an honor to be able to work with the Returning Veterans Project, and see it as an opportunity to serve my country by helping provide healing and support to those with unseen battle wounds.
